Adjusting to this new way of living teaching has been exciting, but not without its challenges.
The first couple weeks were spent with introductions about myself. It was good for me to get to feel of each class and answer questions about myself. The younger students were a little more enthusiastic about meeting me than the older ones, but I was able to give more personal details with the older groups so I feel like they know me better, so I appreciated them all the same.
I am starting to get used to each teacher’s style. Since I work with about 10 different teachers, it is interesting to adjust to each one’s personal style throughout a day or week. For the most part, I mesh well with all my teachers and can even see myself becoming friends with a few of them.
While most of my time in the classroom is spent assisting with workbook activities, I have been able to incorporate several lessons based on my interests and experiences. I have created lessons on one of my favorite NYC artists, Jean Basquiat, the use of Ethos Pathos and Logos in advertisement, the history of rock and roll, a fun Halloween lesson with Michael Jackson, and even a Murder Mystery activity.
My favorite lessons are when I am able to have lively debates or discussions around a controversial topic. It is really interesting to gauge how young people see the changing world around them. Whether it is about technology, politics, art or even pop culture, I am always curious and excited to share perspectives, and I think, once they get comfortable, the students like it too.
